UP MLC Elections: BJP Wins 6 Seats, SP Finishes Close Behind with 5
The BJP has won six of the 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, while the Samajwadi Party has secured five. The result gives the SP a boost ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have retained its position as the leading party in the latest Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, but the Samajwadi Party (SP) has given it a tough fight.
The final tally is six seats for the BJP and five for the SP out of the 11 seats contested. At first glance, the BJP has won the most seats. But the narrow gap between the two parties makes the result politically important, especially with the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching.
In the previous election in 2020, the BJP had won six seats, the SP three, and independent candidates two. This time, the BJP has matched its earlier tally, while the SP has increased its number of seats from three to five.
In simple terms, the BJP has not added to its previous total, while the SP has made gains.
Why is Varanasi important in this election?
One of the major talking points is the SP's performance in Varanasi, the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The SP retained the Varanasi Teachers' constituency, where its candidate Lal Bihari Yadav won. The party also made gains in the Varanasi Graduates' constituency, where its candidate Ashutosh Sinha was leading during counting.
The results from Varanasi matter because the BJP has a strong political presence in the region. A good performance by the SP there gives the opposition party a reason to feel more confident ahead of the next state election.
However, a Legislative Council result in one constituency should not automatically be treated as a prediction of how voters will behave in the Assembly election.
What are these MLC elections, and who votes in them?
Many people are familiar with elections for the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha, where voters directly elect their MPs and MLAs. Legislative Council elections work differently.
The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council is the state's Upper House, alongside the Legislative Assembly, or Vidhan Sabha.
These particular elections were held for five graduates' constituencies and six teachers' constituencies. The electorate in these constituencies is made up of registered voters who meet the relevant eligibility requirements, rather than the entire population of the state.
That means the results reflect the choices of a specific group of voters. They can reveal political support among graduates and teachers, but they do not represent the views of every voter in Uttar Pradesh.
What does the result mean for the 2027 Assembly elections?
The next Assembly election is expected to be a major political contest between the BJP and the SP. Both parties will be looking for signs of public support and opportunities to strengthen their campaigns.
For the BJP, winning six seats means it has maintained its previous total. But failing to increase that number, while the SP rises from three seats to five, will make the result worth examining.
For the SP, the outcome offers an opportunity to argue that it is strengthening its position in the state. Its performance in important constituencies, including Varanasi, adds weight to that political message.
Still, there is an important difference between these elections and the Assembly polls. The MLC constituencies have a limited and specialised electorate, while Assembly elections involve voters across the state choosing their local representatives.
The issues that shape the Assembly election will also be much broader, including jobs, inflation, law and order, welfare schemes, development and the performance of the state government.
The bigger picture
The key takeaway is that the BJP has won the most seats, but the SP has narrowed the gap considerably compared with the previous election.
The result gives the opposition party a boost and provides the BJP with reasons to review its performance. But it is too early to say that these figures will translate directly into an Assembly election outcome.
The real test will come in 2027, when voters across Uttar Pradesh decide which party they want to govern the state.
