Rahul Gandhi’s Convoy Involved in Collision on Purvanchal Expressway

A minor accident involving vehicles in Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy took place on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district on Monday, October 26, 2026.

Rahul Gandhi was travelling from Lucknow to Sultanpur to appear before a special MP-MLA court in a defamation case. His vehicle was ahead of the other vehicles and was not involved in the collision. He remained safe.

How Did the Accident Happen?

According to a police officer quoted by news agency PTI, the accident happened around 10:15 am near Haliyapur. A private vehicle at the front of the group reportedly applied the brakes suddenly, causing vehicles behind it to collide.

Reports said several vehicles were involved, including an ambulance. Some accounts reported injuries among Congress workers and security personnel, while other reports said no major injuries occurred. The exact number of injured people was not immediately clear.

Why Was Rahul Gandhi Travelling to Sultanpur?

Rahul Gandhi was on his way to attend proceedings in a criminal defamation case linked to remarks he made about then-BJP president Amit Shah during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election campaign.

A local BJP leader, Vijay Mishra, filed the complaint in August 2018. The court had scheduled October 26, 2026, to deliver its verdict.

After the collision, the convoy continued towards Sultanpur, where security arrangements had been strengthened around the court complex.
