Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Using Money and Threats to Pressure TMC Leaders

Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of using money, police pressure and threats to influence people in West Bengal. The allegations come amid a dispute over affidavits and documents submitted to the Election Commission.

Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Using Money and Threats to Pressure TMC Leaders

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of using money and intimidation to put pressure on people and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers. She also alleged that police action against her party members had increased and that government officials were being used to threaten them.

Banerjee made these allegations on Sunday, October 25. Her remarks were reported by several news organisations, including The Economic Times, The Telegraph and The New Indian Express.

What exactly did Mamata Banerjee say?

Banerjee alleged that people were being threatened through district magistrates, block development officers (BDOs), police station officers and superintendents of police (SPs).

She also claimed that the authorities were helping people obtain documents such as stamp papers and notarised affidavits, while her party was facing difficulties getting the same support.

Questioning the situation, she asked whether people in the country still enjoyed freedom. She said India's freedom fighters had sacrificed their lives for independence, but political workers were now allegedly facing pressure and threats of imprisonment.

Banerjee challenged the BJP to fight her party politically instead of, as she alleged, using money and intimidation.

Why are stamp papers and affidavits important in this dispute?

This is an important part of the controversy.

An affidavit is a written statement of facts that a person formally declares to be true, usually by signing it before an authorised official. Political parties may submit affidavits from supporters as evidence in disputes over party identity, leadership or election symbols.

A report published by ThePrint on October 15 said the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction had accused the police of pressuring people to sign affidavits in support of a rival faction. The faction also alleged that difficulties in obtaining stamp papers were affecting its ability to submit documents.

The dispute had reached the Election Commission, which had asked the rival groups to submit affidavits and additional documents as part of the proceedings over the party's identity, funds and election symbol.

These earlier allegations provide context for Banerjee's latest comments. However, claims of police pressure, unfair access to documents or coercion must be distinguished from independently established facts.

Is the BJP using government officials to threaten TMC workers?

Banerjee has alleged that officials are being used to put pressure on her party's leaders and workers. She also claimed that even people who wanted to meet her individually were being prevented from entering her office.

The allegations also raise questions about whether both sides have equal access to the documents required in the Election Commission proceedings. That question will depend on the relevant records, official responses and any findings by the authorities.

What happens next?

The dispute centres on the documents being submitted to the Election Commission and the competing claims surrounding the TMC's identity and leadership.

Banerjee has accused the BJP of trying to influence people through money and threats. The allegations have added another layer to the political confrontation in West Bengal.

For now, the key distinction is between what Banerjee has alleged and what has been independently verified. Any further findings by the Election Commission, police or courts could help establish whether the alleged pressure or obstruction took place.
