INDIA Bloc Holds ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ Rally in Delhi, Opposition Leaders March to Ramlila Maidan
Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee and other INDIA bloc leaders travelled in an open-top bus from Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence towards Ramlila Maidan for a rally against alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Leaders of the INDIA bloc on Sunday took part in a major political march in the national capital under the slogan ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’, raising concerns over alleged electoral irregularities and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The Opposition alliance organised the rally at Ramlila Maidan as part of its campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The event brought together senior leaders and supporters of several Opposition parties, who sought to highlight concerns about the electoral process and the protection of voting rights.
Before proceeding to the rally venue, several prominent leaders gathered at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. From there, they travelled towards Ramlila Maidan in an open-top bus, passing through Minto Road as part of the planned march.
Among those seen on the bus were Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, Congress MP K.C. Venugopal, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi.
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other senior Opposition leaders also reached Kharge's residence before the march.
Senior INDIA Bloc Leaders Come Together
The gathering at Kharge's residence reflected the participation of several parties within the INDIA bloc. Apart from Congress and the Samajwadi Party, leaders from regional and Left parties also joined the programme.
Those present included Mamata Banerjee, CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby, CPI general secretary D. Raja and CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, among others.
The leaders proceeded towards Ramlila Maidan in an open-top bus, where supporters of different alliance partners had gathered.
The march was presented as a collective political demonstration against the functioning of the Election Commission and the alleged irregularities associated with electoral rolls. The Opposition's central demand was the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Large Number of Supporters Gather Along the Route
Supporters gathered in large numbers around the open-top bus carrying the INDIA bloc leaders as it moved towards Ramlila Maidan.
Party workers and supporters also assembled at different locations across Delhi ahead of the protest. At Ramlila Maidan, people associated with various INDIA bloc parties gathered to participate in the rally.
The visible participation of supporters from different political organisations gave the event a multi-party character. The march also provided an opportunity for Opposition leaders to appear together and publicly demonstrate their common position on electoral issues.
However, the exact number of people attending the rally was not established in the information available for this report.
Opposition Leaders Express Confidence in the Campaign
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MP E.T. Mohammed Basheer described the rally as encouraging and expressed confidence in the Opposition's campaign.
Speaking about the event, Basheer said the gathering was a positive development and that the alliance was confident of succeeding in its efforts.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he had attended the rally to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Expressing his expectation, he said he believed the CEC would resign.
His statement reflected the position taken by several Opposition leaders, who have made the Chief Election Commissioner's resignation a central demand of the campaign.
Ram Gopal Yadav Calls It an Unprecedented Rally
Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav described the gathering as an unprecedented rally. He also criticised the BJP, accusing the party of making misleading statements.
Yadav questioned the credibility of the BJP's claims and said people could not be expected to trust what the party said.
His remarks added to the political exchanges between the Opposition and the ruling party over the allegations concerning electoral processes.
SIR and Electoral Fairness at the Centre of the Protest
The rally's central focus was the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Opposition's allegations of irregularities in the process.
Opposition parties have raised concerns that eligible voters could be affected by changes to electoral rolls. They have also questioned the Election Commission's handling of the exercise and demanded greater accountability from the institution.
The INDIA bloc has sought to frame the issue as a matter of democratic rights, arguing that every eligible citizen must be able to exercise the right to vote without facing wrongful exclusion from electoral rolls.
The demand for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation has become a major part of the alliance's campaign. Through the ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ slogan, the Opposition is attempting to connect its criticism of the Election Commission with the broader question of electoral transparency and public trust.
The Election Commission's response to the specific allegations raised during the rally was not included in the statements available for this report.
A Show of Opposition Unity
The participation of leaders from Congress, the Samajwadi Party, the Trinamool Congress, the Left parties and other INDIA bloc constituents highlighted the alliance's attempt to present a united front on the issue.
The presence of Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee and Tejashwi Yadav together on the open-top bus was a prominent feature of the march. Their joint appearance was intended to demonstrate that the Opposition's concerns over electoral processes extend across party and regional boundaries.
For the INDIA bloc, the rally was not only a protest against SIR but also an effort to bring public attention to questions about electoral fairness and the accountability of constitutional institutions.
The political significance of the event will depend on whether the alliance can sustain its collective campaign beyond the gathering and take its concerns into a wider public debate. It will also depend on the evidence presented in support of its allegations and the response of the Election Commission through the appropriate institutional processes.
